The Regional Direction of National Museums of Veneto is pleased to present the exhibition The Last Rebirth. Gods and Heroes at the Dawn of the Age of Technology 1890\/1935<\/i>, born from a collaboration between Villa Pisani in Stra and the National Museum of the Salce Collection in Treviso, curated by Francesco Trentini and Elisabetta Pasqualin.
The exhibition showcases the extraordinary rebirth of ancient gods on the advertising posters<\/i> of Italy during the Belle \u00c9poque through 54 works that are rarely displayed to the public, normally kept in the deposits of the National Museum of the Salce Collection. The works, exceptional for their aesthetic quality and historical-cultural value, range from the large advertising posters by Adolf Hohenstein, Leopoldo Metlicovitz, Giovanni M. Mataloni, Marcello Dudovich, Duilio Cambellotti, and Plinio Codognato, to the extraordinary author covers of the Piccola Biblioteca di Scienze Moderne published by the Turin publisher Bocca, up to two rare tins created by Hohenstein for the Cinzano company.<\/p>\n
Divided into three sections within the exhibition spaces of Villa Pisani, the exhibition guides visitors on a fascinating journey through absolute masterpieces of Italian Liberty advertising posters, surprising in its thematic variety.
The visit opens with the section \u201cMyth and Technology,\u201d where the underlying theme of the exhibition is illustrated by showcasing the multiple forms of the relationship between divinity and modern technology. Key pieces include: the group of nymph and satyr created by Adolf Hohenstein for the advertisement of phosphorus-free matches from Dr. Craveri; the Hermes from the poster by Leopoldo Metlicovitz for the inauguration of the Sempione tunnel (1906); the smiling figure of Astrea imagined by Giovanni M. Mataloni for the gas lighting Auer poster (1895), presented here in its first version in green and in the red print, illustrating the technical peculiarities of chromolithography of the time.<\/p>\n
The location of the exhibition at Villa Pisani arises from the desire to put in dialogue The Last Rebirth<\/i> of the ancient gods with the widespread and imposing presence of ancient deities in the decorated rooms of the Villa, to encourage a new perspective on the gods of Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, Giambattista Crosato, Jacopo Guarana, Giovanni Carlo Bevilacqua, brought to Pisani to elaborate historical and contextual dynamics that are partly still not fully discovered. This will be an opportunity for a deep exercise in cultural memory, which Villa Pisani offers a hundred years after the beginning of the inexhaustible experience of the Atlas of Mnemosyne curated by Aby Warburg and his circle starting in 1926, perhaps the most eloquent testimony of this last rebirth<\/i> that still challenges us.<\/p>\n
During the visit, it will be possible to preview the exhibition rooms and meet the curators.
The exhibition will be open to the public from January 31 to May 3, 2026.<\/b><\/p>\n
