Oasi Lycaena

Today’s Lycaena Oasis, in the mid-1950s, was a clay pit from which clay was extracted for brick production.

In the last twenty years, without further human intervention, it has been able to evolve, reclaiming many natural characteristics and acquiring a strong ecological significance, to the point of being recognized as a Special Protection Zone and Site of Community Interest.

Of the total area of 60 hectares, two thirds are occupied by forest areas, while in the central part, about 20 hectares, consisting of ponds of various depths, the Drainage Consortium has created a large area for the phytodepuration of the waters of the Marzenego river, along the embankment of which part of the equipped pathway develops.

Numerous animal species are present and observable by visitors: in the wooded areas, the woodpecker, the buzzard, the magpie, the tits, the chaffinch; in the wet zones, the mallard, the coot, the moorhen, the little egret, the grey heron, and the rare great white heron. Among the insects, we highlight the Lycaena butterfly, a rare species at the European level and a symbol of the Oasis itself.

In the mid-fifties of the last century it was a quarry from which clay was extracted for the production of bricks. In the last twenty years, not undergoing further interventions by man, it has been able to evolve recovering many characteristics of naturalness and acquiring a strong ecological value.
