Chiesa di San Nicola

Church dedicated to Saint Nicholas Bishop with a magnificent bell tower in Venetian style

This church was built in 1885 on the remains of an older one, dating back to 1489, although there are documents that refer to a church prior to the year 1000.

Very impressive is the bell tower, which still preserves the structural lines of Romanesque architecture from the 11th century, such as the small vaulted reliefs above the arches and the double windows of the bell chamber, adorned with Istrian stone columns.

The first documents on the church date back to 1242: dedicated to Saint Nicholas, it was the chapel of the parish church of Saint Thomas of Corte. In 1866 the ancient church was rebuilt and only in 1967, after important work of adjustment according to the dictates of Vatican II, consecrated. Over the years it has been used as a school, shelter of displaced persons in the Second World War and, for a short time, asylum and shelter for flood victims in 1966.
